For their last show for now, Sounds Nais invites two luminaries of the Pinoy music scene.
In the ’90s, Toti Dalmacion was one of the first DJs to introduce house and electronic music to the Philippines, with his Consortium parties bringing in Derrick May, Laurent Garnier, and Juan Atkins. He also founded Terno Recordings, a label that has launched the careers of recognized Pinoy bands such as Up Dharma Down and Radioactive Sago Project. Today, he runs Hodge Podge, a local record store, with his family, championing pop-not-pop music like new wave, indie, post-punk, and more.
Proudly the son of Dennis Garcia, bassist of the Manila Sound–pioneering band Hotdog, Pasta Groove (Paolo Garcia) naturally has music as his heritage. Through his own OPM (Other People’s Music) Records, he pushes the boundaries of soul, jazz, and funk in the archipelago, as heard in the vinyl-forward projects Dakila, Parallel Uno, NGAW, and Muling Kagat. His music reconstructs sounds from the past and brings them forward in a new format, made palatable for today’s youth. He also reissued the late ’70s Pinoy rare groove compilation Umpak! and continues to produce with and for others, most recently on Hermano Jazz.
Unsurprisingly cousins, the pair share a mixed bag of library and cinematic soundscapes, tripping into funk, jazz, and psych-soul for this special mix.
