Valentine Comar continues her “Breakfast in…” series, where she invites DJs and collectors from around the world to curate a guest mix under the breakfast theme.
This week, she welcomes Studio Batsumi, the London-based duo of Federico and Marta, with a special vinyl-only mix titled "Breakfast with a Dragon".
Studio Batsumi was born from a chance meeting in an East London record shop four years ago. Since then, Federico and Marta have built a shared world through DJing, production, and their own record label. Their sound is warm, percussive, and genre-fluid, blending eclectic club rhythms, live instrumentation, and crate-dug obscurities. Their debut EP Cosmicomics (May 2024) introduced their downtempo, Balearic, and tribal leanings, and a new EP Ya Hu Ra released in sept 2025, inspired by travels in Southeast Asia.
Their guest mix takes a more introspective turn. Inspired by a track they love; A story about a lonely dragon left out for being different. The mix imagines a quiet, symbolic breakfast shared with this mythical figure.
“The dragon represents anyone who feels misunderstood or isolated just for being different,” they explain. “The mix unfolds like a conversation: gentle at first, slowly opening up. It’s about inner struggles, self-acceptance, and eventually finding connection, whether with yourself or someone else.”
Rather than playing one track at a time, they’ve chosen to mix the set continuously to create a sense of movement and emotional flow: “We wanted it to feel like a journey, from feeling lost to feeling seen. A little emotional trip, told through music. And yes, a little self-promotion too… because why not?”
Expect a cinematic and heartfelt hour that moves between ambient textures, hypnotic percussion, and organic grooves, a reflective soundtrack for anyone who’s ever felt like the outsider, "Dedicated to all the lonely dragons out there".
