Kate Hutchinson is a DJ, journalist and broadcaster who has been a prominent fixture on the UK airwaves for nearly two decades. She hosts a fortnightly show on Soho Radio and was a long-time resident on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM, while her DJing has taken her to Lake of Stars in Malawi, Studio Lam in Bangkok and an Oxfam shop in Dalston, where she once warmed up for Fatboy Slim.
Live from WOH Radio Stage, Kate will be lifting the lid on the overlooked underground arts scene of 'No Wave' in 1970s New York. No Wave was a reaction to punk and New Wave, with a soundtrack that zoned in on dissonance, atonality and elements of free jazz, disco and the avant-garde. It brought together a bunch of creative misfits who went to international acclaim, including film-maker Jim Jarmusch and poet/performer Lydia Lunch. Kate will thread together narrative music and musings by musician, author and No-Waver Adele Bertei to explore why a short-lived, DIY movement of confrontational artists became so vital and influential.
