The Punjabi word pind means village. For Punjabis across the world, the idea of the pind stretches far beyond geography. It’s a shared cultural memory carried through family stories, migration and, perhaps most powerfully, music.
Worldwide FM's Rohan Rakhit explores how Punjabi music has travelled from village to village across the diaspora, evolving as it moves live from WOH Radio Stage. From the folk traditions of rural Punjab to the diasporic sounds that emerged in places like Southall, Vancouver and Birmingham, the programme traces how each generation has reshaped the sound while staying connected to its roots.
Through a mix of storytelling and music, Rohan will move across decades of Punjabi sound: traditional folk recordings, early bhangra band recordings from the UK diaspora, devotional and poetic forms, and contemporary global interpretations that continue to carry the influence of the pind.
This is a story of a musical village that exists across continents, where heritage, migration and collective creativity continue to shape the sound of the present.
